Why I'm here, it starts with Turkey Twizzlers...
I’m looking forward to this being a place where we can go into more depth about nutrition science, myth busting and some fun with food and recipe recommendations. For this first one, I am going to skip the nutrition deep dive and instead share a bit about me.
Deep Dive
I have loved food, cooking and baking for my whole life. When it came to me going to university, I originally signed up for a law degree but ended up going through clearing and around this time Jamie Oliver had been campaigning for healthy school meals and getting rid of Turkey Twizzlers. I had really enjoyed that, and I could really see the benefits of good school dinners. So, based on enjoying watching Jamie Oliver on the TV, I decided to do a nutrition degree…luckily it was a great decision!
I graduated after a recession so all the NGOs that had been set up post the Jamie Oliver revolution had closed or lost a lot of funding. So, I didn’t end up working in nutrition. I ended up getting a corporate job and spent the next 15 years working my way up the corporate ladder, always in food manufacturing but not anything related to nutrition.
Throughout that time, I still always had my passion for nutrition. I would keep up to date with any research that came out or any family and friends that needed advice, I would be there to help them.
I watched social media fill up with incorrect nutrition information and was frustrated to see people in a place of authority presenting incorrect information with complete confidence. And I saw first hand how easily it can be to get caught out by it. I was struggling with autoimmune conditions and severe fatigue, and my Instagram feed became full of content about cortisol and the Autoimmune Protocol. Even though I rationally knew that this sort of protocol should only be applied with the support of a Dietician and that it was unlikely to work, when you’re in the trenches sometimes you are willing to try anything. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t work, but it was expensive, so many specialist ingredients!
It turned out I was peri-menopausal, starting HRT made me feel like myself again. That’s when I decided that I need to follow my passion and get back into nutrition. I want to support people to get back to the basics with nutrition and healthy habits and stop spending all their time and money on the extremes the Instagram promotes.
I am going to get one of these newsletters out every couple of weeks, deep diving into different topics. If there’s anything you would like me to cover, please just drop me a message. And if you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! Make sure you hit subscribe and in the next issue I’ll be diving into food labels and how to really understand what you are reading.

With another heatwave incoming, this gets you protein, fats, carbs and fiber, it takes less than 15 minutes and you can make a batch of it to eat throughout the week.
Food
Manilife Peanut butter
So many healthy peanut butters taste too healthy! They aren’t as nice as the ones loaded with sugar, and let’s be real we want our PB on toast or on top of our porridge to taste delicious. This is the best PB I have found that is just peanuts & salt.

Electrolytes are not needed!
Just because the weather is hot, we don’t suddenly need to be drinking electrolytes every day, most of us get plenty of salt and minerals from our diet.

Healthy Coco Pops
Check out Molly, who is making healthier versions of some of our favourite products. This one is homemade coco pops and I love cereal so this is on my list to try!
